Odhalenie pamätnej tabule československým príslušníkom RAF.
On 18 June a memorial plaque to commemorate the some 2,500 Czechoslovak airmen and women who served in the RAF during WW2 was unveiled. Two hundred and sixty of these airmen were Slovaks. The memorial plaque is located at the entrance to the Eurovea shopping center at the Milan Rastislav Štefánik Square in Bratislava and it was sponsored by the British expat communities in the Slovak Republic and Czech Republic.
Dňa 18. Júna 2014 bola odhalená pamätná doska na pamiatku približne 2500 československých letcov a žien, ktorí počas 2. svetovej vojny slúžili v RAF. Dvestošesťdesiat týchto letcov boli Slováci. Pamätná tabuľa je umiestnená pri vchode do nákupného centra Eurovea, na námestí Milana Rastislava Štefánika v Bratislave a bola sponzorovaná britskými krajanskými komunitami zo Slovenskej a Českej republiky.
Attending the ceremony was Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach; Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, Milan Maxim; Chief of Army Staff of Slovakia, Livia Klaus; Czech Ambassador to Slovakia, Ms Gill Fraser; British Chargé d’Affaires in Bratislava, Miloš Koterec; Secretary of State for the Slovak Ministry of Defence, Czechoslovak RAF veterans Emil Boček, Alois Dubec and Milan Pika, local dignitaries and about 300 well-wishers.
Ceremoniálu sa zúčastnili Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach – zástupca náčelníka generálneho štábu, Genpor. Milan Maxim – náčelník generálneho štábu OS SR, Lívia Klausová – veľvyslankyňa českej republiky v Slovenskej republike, pani Gill Fraser – veľvyslankyňa Veľkej Británie v Slovenskej republike, Miloš Koterec – štátny tajomník ministerstva obrany Slovenskej republiky, Československí veteráni RAF: Gen. let. Emil Boček, Pplk. let. Alois Dubec a Gen. let. Milan Píka, miestni hodnostári a asi 300 priaznivcov.
The ceremony commenced at 16:30 with a short musical display by the Royal Air Force College Band. The Pipes and Drums band of the Queen’s Royal Hussars then marched on and lead the assembled VIP’s, dignitaries and invited guests to the memorial plaque.
Cremoniál začal o 16:30 h krátkou hudobnou ukážkou Royal Air Force College Band. Plukovná hudba regimentu Queen’s Royal Hussars vypochodovala a viedla zhromaždených význačných hostí, hodnostárov a ostatných pozvaných k pamätnej tabuli.
In his speech before unveiling the plaque, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach said of the wartime Czechoslovak airmen: “Seventy years ago, 2,500 young men from your countries – from their own will – decided to take part in World War II. They flew with the Royal Air Force and were courageous. Many of their friends did not return back. We’re now unveiling a plaque in the spirit of their heroism which is not just a reminder of those brave fighters, but it is also a celebration of the common friendship between Slovakia and Britain”.
Vo svojom prejave pred odhalením pamätnej tabule, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach povedal o československých letcoch počas 2. svetovej vojny: „Pred 70 rokmi, 2 500 mladých mužov z vašich krajín, sa z vlastnej vôle rozhodlo zúčastniť Druhej svetovej vojny. Lietali v britskom kráľovskom letectve RAF a boli odvážni. Veľa ich priateľov sa nevrátilo späť. My teraz odhaľujeme tabuľu v duchu ich hrdinstva, čo nie len pripomienkou týchto statočných bojovníkov ale taktiež je to oslava spoločného priateľstva medzi Slovenskom a Veľkou Britániou“.
Following official group photographs being taken, the Pipes and Drums band lead VIP’s, veterans and guests to the Gen M R Štefánik monument where a two minute silence was observed, followed by the National anthems of Slovakia and Great Britain.
Po oficiálnom fotografovaní, hudba regimentu Queen’s Royal Hussars viedla význačných hostí, veteránov a pozvaných k pamätníku Gen. M. R. Štefánika, kde si prítomní 2 minútami ticha uctili padlých a následne zazneli hymny Slovenskej republiky a Veľkej Británie.
The ceremony concluded, at 17:30, with a flypast display by Spitfire TE184, in the livery of F/Lt Otto Smik DFC, and flown by Stephen Stead.
Slávnosť uzavrel o 17:30 h prelet Spitfiru TE184 v podobe v akej lietal F/Lt Otto SMIK, DFC. Lietadlo bolo pilotované pánom Stephenom Steadom.
