Prague district fined 150,000 Kcs over installation of monument to WW2 pilots

Prague, Nov 5 (CTK) – The City Hall heritage section fined the Prague 1 district authority for having installed a monument to Czechoslovak WWII pilots in RAF sponsored by the British community in the Czech Republic in a park in the Prague centre, Prague 1 spokeswoman Veronika Blazkova told CTK today.
The City Hall breached the law as it did not have any permit from the heritage section for the installation of the monument, Blazkova and City Hall spokeswoman Petra Hruba said.
“I can confirm the fine. We disagree with it and we will appeal it. I will not elaborate,” Blazkova said. The Culture Ministry will have the final say as it is the appeals body in this case.
“We do not want to denigrate the memory of Czechoslovak pilots, but we are of the view that valid laws must be observed, not circumvented,” Hruba said.
“The mayor and some city councillors should set example when observing clear administrative procedures,” she added.
The two-metre bronze statue of a winged lion, made by British sculptor Colin Spofforth, stands on a concrete plinth covered by Czech granite. If seen from above, the circular plinth looks like the emblem of the Czech air force. The cladding and riveting on its side resemble an aircraft skin.
The monument is opposed by Prague heritage protectors who resent both its size and location. Some 2,500 Czechoslovak pilots served with RAF during World War Two. A total of 493 of them died in action.
Praha 1 dostala od magistrátních památkářů pokutu za umístění památníku letcům, takzvaného okřídleného lva na Klárově. Pokuta je 150.000 korun, rozhodnutí magistrátu je nepravomocné. ČTK to potvrdily mluvčí Prahy 1 Veronika Blažková a mluvčí magistrátu Petra Hrubá. Radnice prý porušila zákon tím, že neměla povolení památkářů pro umístění sochy.
“Pokutu mohu potvrdit. Nesouhlasíme s ní a odvoláme se. Více to nyní komentovat nebudu,” řekla ČTK Blažková. Definitivní slovo tak bude mít ministerstvo kultury, které je v tomto případě odvolacím orgánem.
“V žádném případě nechceme dehonestovat památku československých letců, nicméně jsme toho názoru, že je nezbytné dodržovat platné zákony, nikoliv je obcházet. Starosta a někteří radní by měli být příkladem pro dodržování jasných administrativních postupů,” řekla na dotaz ČTK Hrubá.
Socha v podobě dvoumetrového okřídleného lva je umístěna na betonovém podstavci pokrytém žulou. Na výrobu sochy podle návrhu britského sochaře Colina Spoffortha sehnali peníze Britové žijící v Česku, chtěli tak poděkovat za hrdinství československých letců sloužících v řadách britské RAF.
Umístění pomníku provázejí od počátku spory s pražskými památkáři. Těm vadí monumentálnost díla i to, že v parčíku již jedna socha je. Kritizují také postup Prahy 1 a britského velvyslanectví, o povolení prý požádaly pozdě a bez dostatečné diskuse. Nabízeli jiné lokality v centru Prahy.
Čeští a slovenští piloti se zapsali do paměti obyvatel Spojeného království zejména při slavné bitvě o Británii. Během ní nacisté utrpěli první významnou porážku ve druhé světové válce. Celkově v době druhé světové války působilo v britském vojenském letectvu (RAF) přibližně 2500 československých pilotů, přičemž 493 z nich v bojích zahynulo.

Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates fights Prague Heritage Departments efforts to remove the Winged Lion
The controversy regarding the Winged Lion memorial location at Klarov, as detailed here and here, continues and is now again under threat because of Prague City Hall’s Heritage Department latest actions.
Spor ohledně umístění památníku Okřídleného lva na Klárově, popsaný zde a zde, pokračuje, a kvůli stanovisku odboru památkové péče Magistrátu hlavního města Prahy je opět v ohrožení.
“The MHMP-OPP’s (Prague City Hall’s Heritage Department) current stance on the Winged Lion Memorial is, we believe, bringing great dishonour to the valiant 2,500 Czechoslovak men and women who fought with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. In our eyes, their eagerness to belittle these airmen by attacking the Winged Lion memorial is baffling at best. Perhaps if Mr. Skalicky had had the opportunity to meet the nine veterans and the numerous relatives and descendants of the 2,500 veterans on 17th June 2014 and witnessed their modesty and humility in context of their courageous feats, fighting for freedom and democracy, he may have changed his stance. The MHMP-OPP’s inexplicable opposition to the memorial has, in our view, saddened the reputation of 2,500 remarkable, brave men and women for what purpose? Perhaps only Mr. Skalicky can explain why?”
„Současný postoj MHMP-OPP k památníku Okřídleného lva je podle nás zneuctěním dvou a půl tisíců československých mužů a žen, kteří během druhé světové války bojovali po boku britského Královského letectva (RAF). Jejich snaha znevážit tyto letce útokem na památník Okřídleného lva je v našich očích nanejvýš nepochopitelná. Možná by pan Skalický změnil svůj postoj, kdyby býval měl příležitost setkat se 17. června 2014 s devíti veterány a také s početnými příbuznými a potomky dalších dvou a půl tisíců veteránů, a kdyby býval byl svědkem jejich skromnosti a pokory v souvislosti s jejich odvážným bojem za svobodu a demokracii. Za jakým účelem pochroumala nepochopitelná opozice pražského odboru památkové péče vůči památníku pověst dvou a půl tisíců mimořádně statečných mužů a žen? To dokáže možná vysvětlit jen pan Skalický.

PRAGUE, 9 October 2014 – Prague’s Heritage Department has decided that the Winged Lion Memorial must be moved from its current site at Klarov to a different, unspecified location somewhere in Prague.
PRAHA, 9. října 2014 – Pražský odbor památkové péče rozhodl o tom, že památník Okřídleného lva musí být přemístěn ze své současné lokace na Klárově na jiné, nespecifikované místo v Praze.
The Memorial was unveiled on the 17th June 2014 by Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames MP, Winston Churchill’s grandson, at a ceremony in the presence of several surviving Czechoslovak RAF veterans who fought in the Second World War. Sir Nicholas spoke of the bravery and self-sacrifice shown by the 2,500 heroes who escaped Nazi tyranny to join the RAF in the battle for Europe’s freedom.
Památník byl slavnostně odhalen 17. června 2014 Sirem Nicholasem Soamesem, vnukem Winstona Churchilla, za přítomnosti několika přeživších československých veteránů britského Královského letectva (RAF), kteří bojovali ve druhé světové válce. Sir Nicholas promluvil o statečnosti a obětavosti dvou a půl tisíců hrdinů, kteří uprchli před nacistickou tyranií, aby po boku RAF bojovali za svobodnou Evropu.
Euan Edworthy and Colonel Andrew Shepherd, who organised the memorial project and raised £100,000 in private donations from the British ex-pat community in Prague, said they were bitterly disappointed with the decision.

At this late stage, now that the Winged Lion has been sculpted, constructed, installed and unveiled at a very moving public ceremony, we simply cannot understand why the city authorities have turned against it.’

Byli jsme přímo ohromeni pomocí a laskavostí, kterých se nám na dlouhé cestě za uskutečněním našeho projektu ze strany institucí dostalo. V této fázi, kdy byla socha Okřídleného lva navržena, vytvořena, instalována a odhalena při velmi dojemném veřejném ceremoniálu, jednoduše nedokážeme pochopit, proč k ní městské autority zaujaly negativní stanovisko,“ řekl Euan Edworthy.
A prominent figure in the Appeal Fund, Adrian Wheeler, expressed outrage at this implied insult to the aviators who risked their lives, and in many cases lost them, to free their country from Nazi rule: ‘These men were the bravest of the brave. They put their lives on the line to help the Allies restore freedom and sovereignty to a small nation that had been cynically eclipsed by Hitler’s hordes. The Winged Lion is a reminder to future generations that these 2,500 flyers could not be beaten. If they don’t deserve a prominent memorial, who does?’
Adrian Wheeler, jeden z předních zástupců fondu Okřídleného lva, vyjádřil své rozhořčení nad tímto zneuctěním letců, kteří riskovali své životy a v mnoha případech o ně také přišli, aby osvobodili svou zemi od nadvlády nacistů: „Tito muži byli nejstatečnější ze všech statečných. Nasadili své životy v boji se Spojenci o znovuzískání svobody a suverenity malého národa, který byl bezostyšně zastíněn Hitlerovými stoupenci. Okřídlený lev budoucím generacím připomíná, že těchto 2 500 letců nemohlo být poraženo. Pokud si nezaslouží významný památník oni, tak kdo jiný?“
The Winged Lion Appeal Fund will now establish a foundation to protect and preserve the memory of Czechoslovak airmen who joined the RAF in World War Two. Its first step will be to distribute a book and a film describing how the airmen escaped, how they were welcomed by the Royal Air Force, how they contributed to the Allied victory, and how – in many instances – they won international acclaim for their exceptional performance as air fighters.
Zástupci fondu Okřídleného lva nyní zřídí nadaci na ochranu a zachování památky československých letců, kteří se za druhé světové války připojili k RAF. Jejím prvním krokem bude distribuce knihy a filmu popisujících únik letců z jejich rodné země, vřelé přijetí ze strany RAF, jejich přínos k vítězství Spojenců a také to, jak v mnoha ohledech získali mezinárodní uznání pro své výjimečné nasazení v leteckém boji.

The idea of creating the Winged Lion memorial in honour of the 2500 Czechoslovaks who served within the RAF and whose efforts contributed to the fight for freedom and democracy came as a big and pleasant surprise to all remaining members and their families. The Association wishes to thank all those who made this happen.
Nápad postavit památník Okřídlený Lev, který je vyjádřením poděkování a úcty 2500 československých příslušníků v rámci RAF, kteří svými činy přispěli k boji za svobodu a demokracii, byla velkým a milým překvapením pro všechny zbývající příslušníky as jejich rodiny. Sdružení děkuje všem, kteří se na realizaci tohoto nápadu podíleli.
The Association does not agree with the subsequent attempt to move this memorial to a different location. The Association is of the opinion that there was enough time to decide its final location before it was completed. Any attempt to have it moved is offensive to all those whom this memorial honours.
Sdružení nesouhlasí s následným pokusem o přemístění památníku z Klárova. Sdružení je toho názoru, že na rozhodnutí o trvalém umístění bylo dost času před jeho postavením. Pokus o přemístění je urážkou památky všech, kterým tento památník vzdává úctu.

The Heritage Department of Prague City Hall claims that the placing of the statue in an architecturally and historically protected area is in violation of the law. The fact that the statue is a gift from the British people is not a mitigating circumstance. Allowing the statue to stay would create a precedent, according to statements made by the MHMP-OPP.

I remember learning in a B.A. Politics class (In Portsmouth, UK), that between WW1 and WW2, the Czechs were recognised as having put into place a democracy that was honoured by others with the same goal. My father, Jiri Reznicek was a fighter pilot with the 313 squadron with the RAF and he loved his country dearly – he was a patriot and an idealist. For me, as his eldest daughter, his character of gentle strength and a wonderful sense of humour is something I have missed greatly. After being assisted by the British Embassy in 1955 to go to the UK (My mother was English) for a 3-month ‘holiday’. My mother, myself and my two younger sisters left with one suitcase between us. Being the eldest (!!), my father instructed me to make no mention of staying in Britain permanently. He also impressed on me to take care of my mother… A year later, we heard that he had been imprisoned because we did not return. Later, he was sent to a uranium mine, eventually having lost enormous amounts of weight, he had his legs amputated and died of a ‘mysterious illness’ at the age of 41. What the Nazis failed to do, the Communist system achieved, not just with my father, but many others. Having been betrayed by their own people who turned a blind eye to the unspeakable injustice focused on those who destroyed the enemy, let this administrative storm in a teacup NOT enact another betrayal, whatever bureaucratig guise it may be hiding behind.
I am 70 years old, and have not, for one moment stopped grieving my father’s loss. I also remember the people in Prague, where we lived, and Jasenna where we spent weeks of holiday each summer. Songs, laughter and warm hugs were typical of the Cechy and Morava. I am proud of my father, his courage and sacrifice. The Winged Lion memorial is including all who fought for freedom in the RAF in WW2. Let us not Dishonour and put down our heroes who fought and returned to a budding regime determined to punish and break them. A lion symbolizing strength and courage, with wings that represent indomitable spirit is perfect!!!
I KNOW that the people of the Czech Republic, who have integrity, will not allow dishonour and insult to be perpetrated on this memorial, nor on the men and women who laid down their lives, or even their quality of life. Thank you for reading this far, thank you for being rooted in the tribe of Libuse and Premysl, as well as Jan Hus and Vaclav Havel. So much to be proud of!
Those Cz aviators named on the monument fought to defend freedom …. CLEARLY SOME CURRENT PRAGUE CITY FATHERS are lacking in basic understanding. Freedom comes with responsibity and to destroy historical memorials in this way places them in the dark ages.
Golden Prague has need of their energy to resolve the visible problems noticed by visitors to our glorious city. … FOCUS ON THAT CITY FATHERS … !!!!

Well over 40 years, I have been researching into the history of the Czechoslovak airmen in the R.A.F, interviewing them, at their homes, and corresponding with them abroad.
In all these meetings, what has always stuck out to me, was their loyalty, pride, and determination they had for their country, and their desire they had to rid their country, of the Nazi tyranny, whether they lived or died. Some never did see that day. those that did survive, were victors, for a short period, and a new enemy arrived in the country, which once again persecuted this band of men and women. Communism did what the Nazi’s failed to achieve! In the late 1980’s, communism failed, and their country, was free again.
Now the hero’s of their country, have finally been accepted for their sacrifices and this Lion Monument, has been erected at Klarov in Prague. It appears that the minority of people are against it! WHY? It has been erected, money paid, then the objections.. What are these people thinking of!!??
Please, can you leave it where it is, as a reminder of their sacrifices, on their behalf. I question the patriotism of the opposition! This is another situation where the minority rule the majority.
Do the correct thing, and leave it alone, and in peace..

These extraordinarily brave men fought, and many died, for the freedom we all (including the bureaucrats at the Heritage Department) enjoy today.
So please have the decency to respect their memory and allow their monument to stand at Klarov.
I am afraid, that as long as communism and other related ideologies are not condemned, such actions shall repeat. It is interesting to note, that in the effect those, who fought against the Nazi Germany, suffer. Looks like repeat of Rapallo or Ribbentrop-Molotov pact. Here in Poland we experience similar problems with the national memory, so sadly it is nothing unique.
We should fight with it, of course.
Please let the memorial remain – it is essential that the patriotism of those wonderful men and women is remembered and the current site is the perfect place.
I believe these people would be fired if they worked in a true democratic country. The traces of the communist era have not yet been eradicated, shame!

My Aunt Edita SEDLÁKOVÁ, LACW 1st class, 311 Sqn., Wireless Operator, (born Edita Hermannova) was killed in the Blacbushe air disaster of 5th October 1945, aged 19 whilst a serving member of the WAAF. I have been informed she was the only Czechoslovak female member of the RAF to lose her life.

Edita’s husband, Zdeněk,SEDLÁK , F/Sgt, 311 Sqn., Flight Engineer, aged 33, was also killed,together with 4 Czech RAF personnel and 17 civilians (23 casualties in total)
The memorial to the civilians which includes Edita has ‘low profile’ in the UK military cemetery at Brookwood and is very difficult to find although it is very close to the Czech section which includes the graves of the RAF personnel.
I support the attempts to leave the memorial where it is. I cannot express it better than
Radek Havelka who says earlier:
“This decision is pure nonsense, no idea why are those bureaucrats focusing just on this issue while they should be solving some much more important ones. Let the memorial be as it is, leave it alone and let us honour those who fought and died for this country !”

Moje teta Edita SEDLÁKOVÁ, LACW první třídy, 311 Sqn., Wireless operátor, (narozený Edita Hermannova) byl zabit v letecké katastrofy Blacbushe 5. října 1945, ve věku 19, zatímco členem sloužící WAAF. Byl jsem informován, že Edita byla jediná žena členem RAF poražena.

Edith je manžel, Zdeněk Sedlák, F/Sgt, 311 Sqn., palubní inženýr, ve věku 33, byl také zabit, 4 České RAF personálu a 17 civilistů (23 obětí celkem), památník na civilisty, který zahrnuje Edita má “low profile” ve Velké Británii vojenský hřbitov v Brookwood a je velmi těžké najít, i když je to velmi blízko české části, která zahrnuje hroby RAF personálu. Podporuji pokusy opustit památníku, kde je. Nemohu vyjádřit lépe než Radek Havelka, který dříve říká: “Toto rozhodnutí je čirý nesmysl, tušení, proč jsou ti byrokrati zaměřuje právě na toto téma, zatímco by mělo být řešení některé mnohem důležitější ty. Nechť pamětní být jak to je, nechat to být a nechte nás ctít ty, kdo bojovali a umírali pro tuto zemi. ‘
Bohumil Vaverka is, was my grandfather. I’m proud to be his granddaughter and shudder at the thought of how he and all on board perished before their time. God bless them and may we never forget. X
Having this monument removed I feel is disrespectful to the memory of the tens of hundreds of Czech airmen and airwomen (and their families), who served their country with fierce commitment and valour during the last World War. The ‘Winged Lion’ is a part of Czechoslovakia’s heritage and should remain in its rightful place. People these days all too easily forget the heavy price which was paid, and don’t realise how fortunate they are living in the free Europe (and even free world) that we do today.
Co nejdůrazněji při této příležitosti protestuji proti postupu úředníků nejrůznějších státních institucí, kteří se domáhají odstranění památníku z místa, kde byl dne 17. 6. 2014. slavnostně odhalen. Jako dcera jednoho z legendárních pilotů 311. čs. bombardovací perutě RAF předmětné snahy vnímám nejen jako osobní urážku a znevažování odkazu jak mého otce, tak i všech jeho kamarádů-bojovníků, kteří během 2. sv. války bojovali a umírali za svobodu našich národů. V neposlední řadě jde zároveň o morální degradaci těch, jenž se o tento pomník osobně zasloužili a financovali jej. Argumentují-li pracovníci předmětných institucí a zejména Památkového ústavu např. tím, že se jedná o poměrně frekventované místo či místo, kde se nalézá více památníků, a proto je již další obdobná připomínka co do lokality nežádoucí, já takový důvod považuji za irelevantní, ba až nepřístojný, neboť prioritou takových památníků je právě osvěžování paměti našeho národa v co nejširším měřítku. Proto je i ono zvolené místo tím správným, neboť jej uvidí mnoho lidí a o to přece jde! Mnoho nomenklaturních kádrů se v minulosti opakovaně dopouštělo záměrného překrucování historie a znevažování statečnosti i skutků (nejen) našich letců. Ti za to jen trpěli i s celými rodinami. Já sama takovou zkušenost mohu jen potvrdit. Zřejmě to některé choré mozky ,,baví” i nyní, tudíž se tento nejapný bojkot stal úmyslným záměrem několika ,,zamrzlých bolševiků” sedících na svých teplých místech v oněch úřadech. A je-li v oné lokalitě více památníků? Tím lépe! Alespoň se uctění památek těm či oněm obětem může vzájemně plynule propojit. Sama za sebe tedy apeluji touto cestou na předmětné úředníky a co nejhořčenějším tónem k nim volám: jistě ani jeden z vás na onen překrásný a úctubudící památník nepřispěl jedinou korunou ze svého jistě úžasného platu. Tak když už vám není svatá památka všech hrdinů, přestaňte je alespoň tím, co děláte, urážet. Začněte konečně myslet hlavou a ne spodní částí těla! Takových je totiž v naší republice pořád až dost! A nejlépe ze všeho byste – vy, úředníci – udělali, kdybyste šli vůbec tzv. od válu, případně ještě dál. A vy, kteří za památník bojujete, bojujte dál, věřím v rozum a aspoň ten zbyteček vlastenectví, který ve vás i nás samotných ještě zůstal. K tomu vám dopomáhej Bůh. V nejhlubší úctě vás proto v tomto směru zdravím a co nejpevněji držím všechny palce.

[Moderators translation: I protest in the strongest possible terms, on this occasion, against the conduct of officials of various state institutions who insist on the removal of the monument which was unveiled on 17th June 2014.
As a daughter of one of the legendary pilots of 311 Czechoslovak RAF Bomber Squadron I perceive that attempts are not only as a personal insult and disrespect of reference to my father but also to all his friends – fighters who fought and died for the freedom of our peoples during WW II.
Finally, it is also a moral degradation of those who have personally strived and financed this memorial.
I consider as irrelevant the arguments of the staff particular institutions such as the Heritage Institute that this is a fairly busy place or a place where you can find more monuments and therefore another similar reminder is undesirable. I consider the arguments even improper because the priority of such monuments is just refreshing the memory of our nation as broadly as possible. So the selected location is the right place because many people will see it and that is what we need!
Many of nomenclature cadres repeatedly committed deliberate distortion of history and disregarded bravery and deeds (not only) of our Airmen in the past. It was not only the airmen that suffered for this distortion; it was their families as well. I have personal experience of this. Obviously some sick minds ‘have fun’ from distorting history, so this inane action becomes a deliberate intent by several ‘frozen Bolsheviks’ sitting in their hot spots in those offices. And are there more monuments? So much the better! At least the monuments can be seamlessly interconnected.
Therefore I appeal to these officials, and in the most indignant tone to them, I say: certainly not one of you has contributed a single penny of their certainly amazing salary to this beautiful monument. So if do not have not a holy relic of heroes at least stop what you are doing – insulting. Start and finally think using your head and not not the lower parts of the body! We have still enough such men in our country! And best of all, you – you, the officials go away! Or even better beyond!
And those of you who are fighting for the memorial, keep fighting. I believe in common sense and at least a little patriotism, in which both you and we can be reminded. God bless you!

This is the only memorial in our country where all our men and women who went to the RAF are remembered. The memorial at Dejvice only remembers the killed airmen of ww2.
With attitudes of:
it is no surprise that a memorial to our patriotic airmen has not been constructed before. That the British gifted this memorial to our country is not a mitigating excuse for our countries failure to remember our patriots.
In March 1939, the Germans invaded our homeland; this was violation of the law and a precedent! The patriotism of these men and women is part of our countries heritage and we must always honour that.
These men and women have earned there honour with patriotism, sacrifice and the persecution they suffered because of Communism. The Heritage Department are earning themselves only shame and dishonour!
This imposing memorial is a fitting tribute to those brave Czech airmen and is sited in a suitable place. The heritage bureaucrats should now give in gracefully and join the rest of us who honour those who gave so much.
These proposals disgust me. The fallen and survivors did not make conditions on their sacrifice, they just got on with it and gave their all. We must never forget their chivalry lest we repeat the errors of the past.
Jen národ, který si váží své historie a svých skutečných hrdinů, dozrál do stavu, kdy se může nazývat pravým národem.
Je to přímo neuvěřitelné, jak brzy se naši radní v Kocourkově probudili. Vyjadřují neúctu nejen k těm čechoslovákům z RAF, kterým je památník určen, ale také k organizátorům a sponzorům, díky kterým tento důstojný památník vůbec stojí.
The brave Czech Airmen choose not to submit to the rules of the new regime that they where faced with after the occupation of their country. Instead they escaped tyranny to fight for the freedom of Europe. Many young man gave their life during this struggle, their graves scattered all over Europe.
It disturbing to see that the legacy of these men,who did not submit to rules, is now part of a bureaucratic struggle.
Leave the monument where it is! Lest we forget!

In total disbelief by this petty bureaucrats red tape – are these patriotic Czech airmen, who aided Britain during WW2, now suppossed to fight for their remembrance from their graves?
It is the moral duty of all who live in the free and democratic world that these airmen fought for to now fight on their behalf to ensure that this worthy monument remains at the worthy location at Klarov.

Je to ostuda, ze se nasi letci dockali pamatniku az nyni. Prazsky Klarov je opravdu spravne misto. Ale co jineho cekat od birokrata, jehoz jedinym poslanim je vytvaret problemy a skodit.
I could not imagine better place fot this memorial than Klarov is, so close to the place, where lived his last years Air Marshal Karel Janoušek. Let the Winged Lion be where he landed!

I´d rather move the Heritage Department (or whatever they have got the guts to call themselves) somewhere else. Let´s say some 2.000 kilometers eastwards. In Moscow, they would be surely cheered for such splendid ideas, but hopefully not in Prague.
Jedinou myšlenkou, o které by bylo možné uvažovat jako o alternativě ponechání památníku tam kde je a v podobě v jaké je, by bylo nabídnout a priori důstojnější a významnější místo, které by povýšilo význam památky těch, kterým je okřídlený lev věnován. Cokoliv jiného je nepřípustné. Titulek “Okřídlený orel se stěhuje na důstojnější místo” by jistě nikoho neurazil. Zatím se ale setkáváme jen s uraženou ješitností magistrátních úředníků a úředníčků a byrokratů památkového úřadu. Způsob, jakým prezentují rozhodnutí, že památník má být do roka odstraněn – asi jako deštěm omytý plakát – je hanebný, ponižující a zpupný zároveň. Ani sovo o tom, proč a na čí počest byl okřídlený lev vztyčen. Ani zrnko pokory a vděku tváří v tvář té nejčestnější oběti životů, osudů a strádání těch, kterým ve skutečnosti vděčíme za tak mnoho. I jen 2,5% hlasujících, kteří jsou přesvědčeni, že pomník vůbec neměl být vztyčen, je pro mne zdrcující. Stále jsem ale optimista a věřím, že pan ministr kultury dostojí svým slovům a pomník (a tím vlastně i čest nás všech) zůstane zachráněn.
The only idea, wchich can be considered as the alternative to let the memorial where it is and asi it is, is to offer the new place with much more dignity and prestige, so that the importace of the remembrance of those, to whom the winged lion is dedicated, can be emphasized. Anything else is impermissible. The headline „The Winged Lion moves to new wordy place!“ would insult nobody. On the contrary for the present, we are provided only by the injured priggery of the petty clerks and byrocrats from Prague City Hall and it’s Heritage Department. The manner, by which the decision about removing the memorial is proclaimed – as removing the old rain-washed banner – is disgraceful, humiliating and arrogant. Not a single word about the pourpose, why the memorial was errected. Not even the single grain of humbleness or gratitude facing the utmost honest sacrifice of life, fates and strugle of those, to whom, in fact, we owe so much. I tis overhelming for me, that 2,5% of people here are convinced, that the memorial should never be errected. In the end, I still remain optimistic ant I hope, that the minister of culture wil stand tall on his words ant the memorial (and the honour of us all) wil remain.

The notion to move this monument cannot be the decision of the heart.
Winged Lion memorial is a fitting monument to all those 2500 Czechoslovak men & women who fought for freedom and democracy with the RAF in WWII. Its location at Klárov could not have been chosen better. It is in a prominent place, sharing the small park with another memorial and it is accessible to all who wish to see it and pay their own respects. It is also worth remembering that the memorial plaque to AVM Karel Janoušek is also close by, at U Železné Lávky Street.
Any subsequent attempt to have it moved elsewhere is degrading for all this memorial represents and it is deeply offensive to the memory of those 2500 brave people. Prague City Hall Heritage Department should have thought of this before it was unveiled. Surely there was enough time to do so. Now it is wholly inappropriate. Those 2500 deserve the thanks and honour. It is also shameful that the Prague City Hall Heritage Department cannot accept gracefully a gift from British people when all that’s required from them, is to give the memorial a location it richly deserves.
Okřídlený Lev je perfektní památník 2500 československým příslušníkům, kteří v rámci RAF bojovali za svobodu a demokracii za 2. sv.v. Vhodnější umístění než jeho stávající na Klárově si nelze představit. Památník je na viditelném místě, sdílí malý park s dalším památníkem a je dostupný všem, kteří zde chtějí zastavit a vyjádřit svou úctu. Stojí také za zmínku, že plaketa generála Karla Janouška je poblíž, v ulici U železné lávky.
Jakýkoliv následný pokus o jeho přemístění degraduje vše, co tento památník představuje a je urážkou vzpomínky na těch 2500 statečných. MHMP-OPP měly o místě dost času rozhodnout před odhalením. Nyní je tento pokus o jeho přemístění nevhodný. Těch 2500 si zaslouží poděkování a úctu. Je rovněž trapné, že MHMP-OPP není schopen přijmout tento dar od britů, když jediné, co je třeba, je poskytnout památníku místo, které si právem zaslouží.
Its a good job not everyone thinks the same as the heritage dept – let’s hope they come to their senses and the monument stays. Those young men were very brave and deserve recognition for their arrives.
Jak má psát člověk co se stydí za svůj národ? Před 25 lety jsem si myslel, že konečně budu také již hrdý na to že jsem Čechoslovák, že patřím do té civilizovanější části světa. Bohužel jsem se opět spletl i když vím ze zkušenosti, že na našich letcích stále leží divný stín. Mnohokrát jsem se s tím setkal. Přemístění tohoto památníku by byl asi už vrchol ignorantství. Když jsem těsně před odhalením sochy četl článek od paní Tučkové, zdálo se mi, že je to špatný vtip. Nyní vidím, že to byl asi návod. Nevím kdo je pan Skalický, nevím čím se živil před listopadem 1989 a ani to vědět nechci, vím jen co je za tou sochou utrpení a bolesti. ale i odvahy a vlastenectví. Nikdo z nás nemá právo rozhodovat o odstranění nebo přemístění Lva. Musím přiznat, že začínám mít strach.

Památník měl být už daleko dříve! Ostuda je, že jsme ho nepostavili sami. A další ostuda ho snad čeká? Ať prosím zůstane kde je! Je to přání nejen moje, ale jistě všech.
My father, Karel Kuttelwascher, served in No. 1 Squadron of the RAF and was the RAF’s highest scoring night intruder pilot. He fought for his country along with so many other brave Czechs and to hear about this terrible attempt to remove the Winged Lion monument from Kralov fills me with anger. I just hope the powers in the Heritage Department stop to think what their forefathers did to free the country from Nazi tyranny and leave this memorial where it is. Shame on you for even contemplating its removal!
Unbelievable and disgraceful behaviour to those patriotic Czechoslovak men and women – would these objecting bureaucrats have done the same or just hidden themselves behind there red-tape.
Keep up this worthy fight as those patriotic men and women can no longer do so themselves.

Málokdo z nich si uvědomuje, kdo za jejich pozice nasazoval životy v někdy předem prohraném boji.
To je případ i letců, účastníků Bitvy o Británii, ale i bitvy o naši svobodu, především členů posádek bombardérů, kde byly ztráty velmi vysoké. Málokdo si uvědomuje, jak s těmito hrdiny, kteří přežili II. světovou válku a vrátili se s odhodláním budovat svou vlast zatočil komunistický režim a jak se tento režim choval k rodinným příslušníkům padlých pilotů. Ti všichni by si zasloužili důstojný pomník, jako vzpomínku na boj našich blízkých za naši svobodu.

It is hard to understand where the opposition is coming from. Surely all Czechs must feel sorry for how the RAF men and women who returned home were treated, and the price they and their families had to pay for serving with the Western allies. Please let this small monument stay!

How many times were our airmen attacked by stupid people? How many times they have to survive attacks of stupid people? I am sure that Winged Lion, great memorial of their fame, will survive stupidity of some similar people today, which are trying damage everything what is not their idea and is not in line with their ideology. Maybe they have promised nice bonuses if Lion disappears. Maybe some developers promise nice money if they will have chance to build any shopping center there or so. What was done by grandfather and father of Mr. Skalicky during WW II and after that? How is possible that Mr. Skalicky does not have any idea about what those mans and women done for our country? Otherwise he will protect the place where Lion stay by his body. His activity of removing Winged Lion from Klarov is faulty spit to the faces of all those who are remembering by the memorial. In all democratic countries all of them were celebrating as heroes, only in the country whose name they were wearing on sleeves of uniforms is continuously staining their names and glory. This dirty spit of Mr. Skalicky can to be returned by Spitfire if he knows what this mean.

The cowards at the Heritage Office have no concept that they would not be in office in a free countrry if not for these brave heroes, they have no appreciation, and our complete disagreement with their ridiculous disloyal decisions must be collectively presented to them. They are truly shameful.

Having visited the winged lion memorial this year with my wife whos Father served with 311 squadron we found it to be set in a wonderfull area where one could sit and reflect, and also so close to the city centre, it should stay where it is, and i fail to understand, the opposition to it.
This decision is pure nonsense, no idea why are those bureaucrats focusing just on this issue while they should be solving some much more imporant ones. Let the memorial be as it is, leave it alone and let us honor those who fought and died for this country !

This article is about the relatively new memorial to the 2,500 Czechoslovak men and women who joined the ranks of the Royal Air Force in World War II and the ongoing wish of Prague City hall’s Heritage Department to move it to a less visible location in the city. I find it ironic, and not a little bit hypocritical, of a body called the “Heritage Department” taking this stance toward a monument dedicated to such an important aspect of the nation’s 20th century history.
Klarov really is a very good place for it from standpoints of prominence and accessibility, being so close to the centre and easy to get to by public transport.
The only other appropriate place I can think of for it in Prague is out in the area of the Letňany and kbely airfields with their rich aviation histories.
Unbelievable that these patriotic men and women are again subjected to the black side of Czech bureaucracy.

Dotyční úředníci z památkářské “péče”, kteří jste schopni kvůli svým byrokratickým kejklům pošpinit památku našich letců, vzkazuji Vám toliko toto: snad se dožiji dne, kdy skončíte na dlažbě, půjdete se živit vlastníma rukama a poprvé v životě budete (snad) někomu užiteční. A jaké argumenty mají ti, podle kterých neměl být památník vůbec postaven?
